A day after being airlifted to Italy from chaos-stricken Afghanistan, ambassador Vittorio Sandalli and his diplomatic staff have re-opened the embassy - at the foreign ministry in Rome, the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
The Rome-based embassy is "monitoring the situation on the ground, in close coordination with European partners", the statement said, noting that other European diplomatic missions had also re-located from Afghanistan to their respective capitals.
An emergency meeting of European Union foreign ministers was talking place on Tuesday, the statement recalled.
"An diplomatic outpost remains operational at Kabul airport, working in close coordination with the Italian and international military chain of command," the statement concluded.
