Italy's trade with Mexico at record high says Alfano

Trade with Mexico has reached record levels and after the United States, it is Italy's second largest trading partner in the American continent, Italy's foreign minister Angelino Alfano said on Tuesday.

"In 2016, bilateral trade was worth over five billion euros," Alfano said in comments at the end of the fifth meeting of the Italy-Mexico commission together with Mexico's secretary for relations with states, Luis Videgaray.

"Growth of 6.4 percent rose to 15.8 percent in the first six months of 2017," Alfano went on.

Alfano expressed solidarity with Mexico for its two recent earthquakes.

"Italy showed its closeness by sending essential aid to the populations affected," he said.

"We also support the renewal of a (free trade) agreement between the European Union and Mexico," Alfano said, adding that the aim was to finalise an updated accord by the end of the year.
