Major progress made against Islamic State says Gentiloni

The international coalition against the Islamic State has made "important" progress against the jihadist group but "effective coordination" is needed to defeat it, Italy's foreign minister said on Tuesday

"IS is a very obstinate enemy who should not be undervalued," Paolo Gentiloni told a meeting of the US-led coalition in Rome being attended by the foreign ministers of 23 countries.

US secretary of state John Kerry earlier told the Rome meeting the coalition had weakened but had not defeated IS in Iraq and Syria, while the group was a growing threat in Libya and might seize its vast oil wealth.

"We are still not at the victory that we want to achieve and will achieve, in either Syria or Iraq, and we have seen Daesh playing a game of metastasising out to other countries, particularly Libya, Kerry said, in a reference to the Arabic acronym for IS.
