Governments' handling of migration needs to be "humane and effective", Italy's premier Mario Draghi said on Tuesday at an intergovernmental conference in Turkey, where a recent surge in Mediterranean migration was high on the agenda.
"Our development and our future depend on respect for the environment and for people," Draghi told a joint press conference in Ankara with Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
"I am talking about the management of immigration, which must be humane and effective. And respect for the environment, the development of renewable energy sources and the safeguarding of biodiversity," he said.
Italy and Turkey are both part of the Mediterranean - a community that dates back thousands of years, "with a unique and fragile ecosystem", Draghi noted.
