A man's charred body was found on Monday inside a burned-out Alfa Romeo in the car park of a cemetery in the northern Italian city of Parma, police said.
An autopsy was due to be carried out on the man, who was said to have been a native of Milan and to have lived and worked in Parma.
A petrol can was found near the vehicle but the blaze appeared to have started inside it said forensic police, who sealed off the area.
Police investigators said they had not ruled out murder or suicide.
The red Alfa Romeo car had an Arezzo number-plate, the Parma Today newspaper reported on its website.
