Italy's head of state Sergio Mattarella was received at the Vatican on Thursday by Pope Francis - his final meeting with the pontiff during his seven-year presidency, which ends in February.
After private talks with Francis in the Vatican library, Mattarella met Vatican secretary of state Pietro Parolin, according to a statement from the presidential palace.
