Mattarella to open Italy-Africa ministerial conference

Head of state Sergio Mattarella will on Thursday give an inaugural address to the Italy-Africa Conference in Rome which is being attended by delegations from over 40 African countries and representatives from international and regional organisations.

Italy's foreign minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi and African Union Commission deputy chairman Kwesi Quartey will also speak at the meeting's inaugural session.

Members of African governments, academics, business people and non-governmental organisation representatives will attend the plenary session of the meeting - chaired by Italy's deputy foreign minister Emanuela Del Re - and subsequent panel discussions.

Italy's prime minister Giuseppe Conte is due to make the concluding remarks to the conference.

On Wednesday evening at Rome's MAXXI - National Museum of the 21st Century Arts - conferees were due to attend a presentation of 'Italy, Culture and Africa' - a programme of events being held in 2019 to build dialogue and cultural interchange between Italy and Africa, the foreign ministry said.

Delegates will also be able to visit the 'African Metropolis. An imaginary city' (exhibition on Africa's art scene which is showing at MAXXI through 4 November), the foreign ministry stated
