Membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, "indispensable" ties with the United States and stabilising the Mediterranean form the "fundamental axes" of European Union founder member Italy's foreign policy, premier Giuseppe Conte said on Monday.
"Besides our responsibilities as members of the EU, these (foreign policy) axes are, clearly, transatlantic relations - with the corollary of our Nato membership and indispensable ties to the US - and stabilising and developing the Mediterranean region," Conte stated.
"But we should not lose sight of the opportunities offers by new international orders," Conte said.
Conte made the remarks in a speech to parliament outlining his new administration's priorities ahead of a confidence vote - the first test for the centre-left-populist government that took office on Thursday.
