The North Atlantic Alliance is vital to the defence of western security and values, Italy's ultraconservative premier Giorgia Meloni told NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg in a phonecall on Thursday.
"President Meloni reiterated that the (North) Atlantic Alliance is essential to defend the security and common values that characterise Western identity," said a statement from Meloni's office.
During the phonecall, Meloni "reaffirmed full support for Ukraine against Russian aggression," the statement said.
NATO should strengthen its commitment "to tackling threats of various kinds coming from all strategic directions, including challenges of the South," Meloni told Stoltenberg, underlining the need for "a comprehensive approach".
