At least six people including five policemen died and over 20 were injured when militants blew up an apartment in the Egyptian city of Giza during a raid by security forces, satellite TV network Al-Arabiya reported.
Police carried out the raid on the apartment in Giza's Al-Haram district, reports said, citing security sources.
The Islamic State jihadist group claimed the shooting dead of two Egyptian policemen in Giza on 9 January.
The killings came less than a day after three foreign tourists were stabbed by suspected IS militants who stormed a hotel in the Red Sea resort of Hurghada.
Both attackers were armed with knives and reports said they raised the IS flag.
Egypt is battling an insurgency largely based in the Sinai Peninsula and hundreds of security force members and government personnel have been killed, with attacks creeping closer to the capital Cairo.
The instability has threatened Egypt's vital tourism industry.
