Italy's foreign minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi has tweeted condolences to Greece for the deadly wildfires that raged through the Attica region around Athens this week, killing at least 79 people, according to officials.

"Moavero Milanesi is following with great concern through (the Italian foreign ministry's) crisis unit the tragic blazes in Greece," the minister wrote late on Tuesday .

"I express closeness to the Greek government and condolences to the victims' families. We stand ready to give support," Moavero continued.

Greek premier Alex Tsipras has declared three days of mourning and a state of emergency in Attica, saying all emergency services have been mobilised.

Italy, Germany, Poland and France have all sent help in the form of planes, vehicles and firefighters, while Spain and Cyprus have also offered assistance.

Thousands of people have fled the area and at least 1,500 homes have been destroyed by the blazes, which ravaged the coastal resort of Mati and surrounding area.

Officials have suggested the wildfires may have been started by arsonists looking to loot abandoned homes.
