The European Union's foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini will attend the international conference on stabilising Libya that Italy is holding in Palermo next week, Mogherini's spokeswoman said in Brussels on Friday.
"I can confirm that from the EU side is it going to be the High Representative for Foreign Policy and (European Commission) Vice-President Federica Mogherini who will attend this conference," Maja Kocijancic told reporters.
The Palermo conference on Monday and Tuesday aims to show the international community's full support for the implementation of the United Nations action plan on Libya and the efforts of UN envoy Ghassan Salame to overcome the political stalemate and transition to a prosperous, stable and secure country, Kocijancic said.
The EU backs has for some years been aiding Libya in its transition and is "a main humanitarian aid and cooperation donor and economic partner" of the turmoil-wracked North African country, she stated.
"Extensive cooperation ranges from strengthening institutions to promoting the business environment and helping municipalities to deliver basic services, to improving the management of public finances, primary health services and strengthening civil society," she said.
Libya's UN-backed premier Fayez al-Sarrajl, High Council of State advisory body chairman Khaled al-Misri and eastern-based parliament speaker Aguila Saleh, France's foreign minister Yves Le Drian, Britain's minister for the Middle East, Alistair Burt, and Niels Annen, minister of state at Germany's foreign office have confirmed they will attend the Palermo summit.
Italy hopes that all of Libya's main power-brokers will attend the conference as well as key international players.
