Moroccan police on Tuesday dismantled a 10-member cell that was allegedly recruiting fighters for the Islamic State militant group in Syria and Iraq, according to the interior ministry.

The cell operated in the cities of Casablanca and Boujniba and its head was also plotting with an IS leader to set up sleeper cells for future terrorist operations inside Morocco, the ministry said.

The alleged cell members had expertise on how to make explosives and were planning with Moroccan IS fighters to attack key facilities in Morocco, the statement added.

Police in April disbanded a four-member terrorist cell allegedly operating in southern city of Laayoune that was plotting a major attack in Morocco, according to the interior ministry.

In March, police captured a 13-member cell of jihadist militants who were planning to carry out attacks in Morocco in the name of Islamic State, according to the ministry.
