Migrants' homelands and the countries migrants head for must "make a big collective effort" to manage migration, former foreign ministry Enzo Moavero Milanesi said on Friday.
"The situation is complicated because everyone views immigration as a major problem and disagrees about it," Moavero said at the Ambrosetti Forum annual international economic conference in Cernobbio, northern Italy.
"But what is needed is for countries of origin and host countries to act together. What's needed is a big collective effort by the international community," Moavero said.
On Thursday, Moavero debriefed Italy's new foreign minister, Luigi Di Maio, who took office in the new centre-left populist government headed by Giuseppe Conte.
