NATO and China are seeking "a cooperative relationship and more reciprocal transparency," Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio said on Wednesday.

Di Maio made the remarks at the 'Inside the New Strategic Concept 2022: NATO towards the future' conference organised by the Centro Studi Americani think-tank in Rome.

A NATO summit in Madrid last week declared that China’s “stated ambitions and coercive policies challenge our interests, security and values” and criticised the Asian superpower for "malicious hybrid and cyber operations and its confrontational rhetoric and disinformation".

The leaders of Australia, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea attended a NATO summit for the first time.

The summit agreed sweeping changes to the military alliance in the wake of Russia's five-month-old invasion of Ukraine, including a huge increase in the number of troops deployed in Europe.
