Italy wants to assist countries bordering Afghanistan that are set to host many thousand of refugees from the Taliban-controlled, war-ravaged country, foreign minister Luigi Di Maio said Friday.
"We need to avoid an exodus from Afghanistan to Europe," Di Maio said on the eve of a visit to Uzbekistan, Tagikistan, Qatar and Pakistan.
"The goal of my trip is to find out how Italy can help Afghanistan's population and bordering countries in order to best manage migration flows," Di Maio stated.
Ensuring safe passage to all those who wish to leave Afghanistan is among Italy's priorities, Di Maio underlined.
