The foreign ministry has arranged for more than 80,000 Italian citizens stranded abroad during the Covid-19 pandemic to return home, the ministry said in a statement.
Italians have been repatriated from 117 countries in over 750 operations aboard planes, boats and over land, the statement said.
A total 1,100 Italians arrived home in past two days aboard 16 special flights from Great Britain, Belgium, France, Spain, the Domenican Republic, Peru, Brasil, Argentina and Somalia, according to the statement.
The ministry is working "tirelessly" with all of Italy's ambassadors and consulates to make sure all Italian citizens are repatriated safely, the statement concluded.
Countries moved to halt international flights and to close their borders when the Covid-19 pandemic began earlier this year, leaving many visitors unable to return to home.
