The government has nominated former finance minister Pier Carlo Padoan to head the London-based European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Italy's current finance minister Roberto Gualtieri told the Italian Senate in a briefing on Tuesday.
Poland and France has have also submitted candidates for the next EBRD president. They are Poland's finance minister Tadeusz Koscinski and Odile Renaud Basso, director-general of France's treasury and ministry of economy and finance, according to the bank's website.
The election of the new president was slated to be held in May but due to the coronavirus emergency is now expected to be held in the autumn.
The EBRD's current president is Indian-born Sir Suma Chakrabarti, who was re-elected to serve a second four-year term in 2016.
