Parliament speaker sends condolences over deadly collision

Lower house of parliament speaker Roberto Fico on Thursday sent "heartfelt condolences" to families of the victims of a crash between a train and truck in northwest Italy that killed two people and injured over 20.

"I extend my most heartfelt condolences and closeness to the families of the victims of the accident overnight between a heavy goods vehicle and a train at Caluso on the Turin-Ivrea-Aosta line," Fico said in a statement.

Fico also wished "a speedy recovery to many people who were injured" in the collision, which occurred late Wednesday on a level crossing near the town of Caluso, northeast of Turin, forcing the engine and two carriages off the rails.

The 61-year-old driver of the train and the 64-year-old Romanian driver of a van that was escorting the truck, were killed in the accident.

The 39-year-old Lithuanian driver of the truck is under investigation over the rail disaster - the third in Italy since 2016.
