Italians who travel abroad over the Christmas period will be quarantined upon their return, while visitors to Italy will have to self-isolate when they arrive, prime minister Giuseppe said on Thursday.
"Italians travelling abroad between 21 December and 6 January will have to go into quarantine when they return home," Conte told a press conference in Rome.
"And tourists visiting Italy over the same period will have to undergo quarantine upon arrival," Conte added.
Italy's ski resorts will be closed from 4 December until 6 January while cruises will be suspended from 21 December until 6 January, Conte said.
Italy on Thursday recorded its highest daily death toll from Covid-19 with 993 fatalities in the last 24 hours, despite falling infection rates in the country's second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
New infections are now down in most parts of the country and the number of people currently infected has also been dropping since the end of November.
Italy is one of the countries with the highest number of deaths from the novel Coronavirus - currently 58,038.
