Police in southern Italy on Tuesday arrested 30 people in an operation that targeted drug trafficking and other rackets allegedly by the Naples mafia's Orlando clan.

The Camorra suspects were held during raids in the Naples area and face charges including mafia association, extortion and illegal arms possession, police said.

The Orlando clan imported "vast" quantities of hashish from Spain and sold the drugs in various districts on Naples' western outskirts including Marano, Calvizzano and Quarto, according to police investigators.

Police said the clan also ran an extortion racket in the neighbourhoods, and bought votes during local elections in Marano, whose town council was disbanded in December for alleged Camorra infiltration.

The Camorra is one of Italy's oldest, wealthiest and most violent mafias. Extortion is one of its main sources of revenue, along with drug trafficking, arms trading, prostitution, usury and waste disposal.

The Camorra's ruthless workings were laid bare by Roberto Saviano's best-selling book 'Gomorrah' published in 2006 and the award-winning film of the same name.
