Rackete urges EU executive to relocate migrants from Libya

German NGO rescue boat Sea Watch3's ex-captain Carola Rackete on Thursday called on the European Commission to rapidly reach an accord between EU countries over the redistribution of refugees and migrants from Libya.

"We have thousands of refugees who need to be evacuated from a country at war. The European Commission must find an agreement as soon as possible on the redistribution of these refugees among European countries," said Rackete.

Rackete was speaking to reporters in the Sicilian city of Agrigento following her questioned there by prosecutors. They are probing her for aiding illegal immigration after she forcibly docked in the island of Lampedusa's port last month to land 40 migrants who were stranded aboard the Sea Watch3 for two weeks.

Rackete's lawyer Alessandro Gamberini told reporters she was "longer a member of Sea Watch 3's crew.

"At this point she will do other things," Gamberini said.

The 31-year-old German woman faces a separate investigation for entering Italian waters despite a direct order to stop.

A judge freed Rackete in early July after she was arrested on 29 June for defying a veto imposed by anti-migrant interior minister Matteo Salvini when she entered Lampedusa's port, ramming a coast guard boat that tried to block the Sea Watch 3 during the operation.

Prosecutors have appealed against Rackete's release from custody.
