Researcher Giulio Regeni's unsolved 2016 murder, the case of detained Coptic Egyptian masters student Patrick Zaki and energy security were on the agenda at talks in Sharm El-Sheikh Monday between Italy's premier Giorgia Meloni and Egypt's president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
Meloni and Sisi's talks on the sidelines of the COP27 climate talks also focused on renewables and migration, Adnkronos learned.
During their hour-long meeting, Meloni underlined to Sisi the value the Italian government places on human rights and its "strong interest" in the cases of Regeni and Zaki, Adnkronos understands.
Regeni's disappearance, torture and murder in early 2016 - Italian prosecutors allege at the hands of Egypt's secret services - caused a diplomatic rift between Italy and Egypt. Zaki, a masters student at the University of Bologna has been detained in Egypt since February 2020 on charges including "disseminating false news" and "inciting to protest".
