Regional governor receives Facebook death threats

A photo of four bullets with death threats and insults to Deborah Serracchiani, governor of Italy's northeast Friuli-Venezia Giulia region have been posted to Facebook, the politician wrote on Thursday.

"There's no point trying to escape, you are going to die!" read the threat written in black felt-tip pen on the bullets and re-posted on Serracchiani's Facebook page.

"Let's kick that filthy whore all the way down to Rome on her backside and kill her there," read another threat re-posted by Serracchiani.

Serracchiani, who is also deputy leader of Italy's ruling centre-left Democratic Party, condemned the posts and urged "constructive" use of social media.

"We all go through difficult times, but I remain convinced that expressions of violence, insults and threats can never be acceptable," she wrote.

Other female politicians in Italy have received recent death threats and insults, including lower house of parliament speaker Laura Boldrini and conservative MP and former equal opportunities minister Mara Carfagna.
