Fayed al-Sarraj's spokesman Mohamed El Sallak denied reports that an attempt was made to assassinate the United Nations backed Libyan premier at Tripoli's Mitiga airport, the Libyan Herald reported Tuesday on its website.
In a statement sent directly to the paper, El Sallak said there had been no shooting or an assassination attempts against Sarraj at Mitiga airport on his return from a visit to Qatar, the Libyan Herald said.
However, the daily quoted "reliable sources" as saying that shots had been fired into the air when Sarraj arrived at the airport.
Numerous reports circulating Monday on Libyan social media said there had been shooting at Mitiga that coincided with Sarraj's arrival at the airport from Qatar and claimed this was linked to his visit to the Gulf state, the paper reported.
