An 83-year-old retired barber was arrested on Monday for stabbing his 48-year-old son to death near the northern Italian city of Turin during a violent row.
Leonardo Buongiorno plunged a kitchen knife into Italo Buongiorno's left thigh after his son allegedly hurled an air-conditioning unit at him at the family's apartment in the town of None, late on Sunday.
After killing his son, Buongiorno locked himself inside his car and tried to commit suicide with the car's exhaust fumes, according to his other son Sergio Buongiorno, who claims to have witnessed the tragedy.
Italo Buongiorno was a drug addict with police convictions for robbery and his behaviour had become increasingly aggressive, Sergio Buongiorno told police during questioning.
"It was self-defence. The situation at home was hellish and I feared for my parents," he said.
Police questioned Leonardo Buongiorno and Sergio Buongiorno all night over Italo Buongiorno's killing.
