Italy's rightwing Brothers of Italy party will table a parliamentary bill that would criminalise 'Islamic fundamentalism', its leader Giorgia Meloni said on Wednesday.
"Brothers of Italy will propose a draft law to introduce the crime of Islamic fundamentalism in this country," Meloni said.
The bill's chief aim is to safeguard national security, while defending religious identity and freedom, Meloni claimed.
"Let's be clear. If you preach hatred, justify or advocate acts of terrorism, you will go to jail."
Meloni this week urged the government to declare a day of national morning for the nine Italians slain by Islamist gunmen in an attack on a bakery in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka last Friday.
"Brothers of Italy renews its appeal to the government to declare a national day of mourning on the day our compatriots' bodies return home," Meloni wrote Monday on Facebook.
"We urge it to report urgently to parliament on the events in Dhaka," Meloni stated.
