A total of 76 sidewalk stalls including snack trucks, souvenir sellers and florist stands will be forcibly relocated from Rome's historic centre July 10 on aesthetic grounds, city mayor Igazio Marino has announced.
"After many years...Rome's most prestigious areas will be freed of commercial activity that is incompatible with decorum," Marino stated.
The stall-holders have 15 days to leave their pitches around the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, Pantheon and the Spanish Steps and face immediate removal and sanctions, the city council said.
From July 10, there will be patrols to move on illegal "snack trucks, souvenir hawkers and flower sellers" from the area, the council said.
Those who refuse to comply will be fined and could have their goods and vehicles impounded.
The businesses will be allowed to operate along various stretches of Rome's Tiber river and near the 1st-century BC Pyramid of Cestius near the Ostiense station, the council said.
