The government is proposing Rome as an official candidate to host the Expo2030 world trade fair and build on the success of the Expo2015 in Milan, it was announced on Tuesday.
"It's now official. Rome is a candidate to host Expo2030. Thanks to all the foreign ministry staff and the diplomatic corps for having worked on this important candidacy," Di Maio tweeted.
Rome, whose official candidacy was unveiled by premier Mario Draghi on Tuesday, will vie with Russia and South Korea to host the six-month-long fair in 2030.
Russia was the first to submit a bid for Expo 2030, proposing Moscow in April of this year, followed by from South Korea, which put forward the port city of Busan in June.
