Russia's unchecked "military aggression" against Ukraine endangers all of Europe's security and must be met with hard-hitting sanctions, Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio tweeted on Friday.
"Russia's military aggression in Ukraine threatens the whole of Europe's security, unless it is stopped," read the tweet.
"We have to respond with targeted sanctions," the tweet continued.
The tweet came ahead of formal approval on Friday by the European Union's 27 foreign ministers of economic sanctions that include a freeze on the assets of Russia's president Vladimir Putin and foreign minister Sergey Lavrov over the decision to invade Ukraine on Thursday.
