Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio on Monday urged Russian authorities to give jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny critical medical care without delay, the foreign ministry said in a statement
At a meeting of European Union foreign ministers, Di Maio "relaunched Italy's plea that immediate access to the necessary medical treatments is assured," the statement said.
Di Maio's appeal came as Navalny was transferred to a prison hospital after his doctors warned at the weekend he was in danger of a heart attack or kidney failure as his hunger strike nears its third week.
"Italy's foreign ministry expresses deep concern over the news about the deteriorating health conditions of Alexei Navalny and calls for immediate access to the professional medical support he needs," the ministry tweeted on Sunday.
