The world should reflect on the "unacceptable" and "deranged" gun attacks against two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand that killed at least 49 people, Italy's Senate speaker Elisabetta Casellati, stated on Friday.

“This is unacceptable violence: the massacre in Christchurch is a drama that should make the entire world stop and think," Casellati said in a statement.

"We as a society must forcibly stamp out the seeds of hatred, intolerance and racism," Casellati's statement went on.

The statement expressed "solidarity" with the families of victims of the "deranged" attacks - the worst mass shootings in New Zealand's history.

Police charged a man in his late twenties over the attacks, which are believed to have been staged by white supremacists.

Three other people were taken into custody in connection with Friday's attacks, one of whom was released, according to police.
