Italy's deputy foreign minister Marina Sereni held talks with Israel's justice minister and deputy premier Gideon Saar on Monday during a five-day visit to Jerusalem and the Palestinian territories.

Earlier, Sereni visited the Knesset, where she met with Mansour Abbas, leader of the Islamist Raam party and with Ram Ben-Barak, who chairs the foreign affairs and defence committees.

Sereni earlier held talks with member of Italy's Jewish community at the Synagogue and at the Italian Jewish Art Museum. She was later due to meet experts on democracy and inter-cultural relation from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

A unprecedented, ideologically diverse coalition government took power in Israel last month, led by right-wing nationalist Naftali Bennet, who has vowed to unite Israel after years of political stalemate.
