Sixth Egyptian Christian killed in Sinai in a month

Suspected Islamic militants shot dead a Coptic Christian inside his home in Egypt's northern Sinai on Friday in the sixth such killing in a month in the restive province, according to a local.

The Egypt Independent cited unnamed security officials as telling the Associated Press news agency that militants stormed the home of plumber Kamel Youssef and shot him dead in front of his wife and children in the flashpoint town of el-Arish.

On Wednesday, suspected militants killed a 65-year-old Coptic Christian and burned his 45-year-old son alive before dumping their bodies on a roadside in el-Arish.

The killings comes after Egypt's Islamic State affiliate, which is based in the volatile Sinai Peninsula, vowed to step up attacks against the country's embattled Christian minority.

An IS video released this week cast Egypt's Coptic Christians as allies of the West in a war against Islam and vowed further attacks on the community.

Attacks on Copts, who make up 10 percent of Egypt's population, have increased since the army's overthrow of an elected Islamist president in 2013.
