Slain anti-mafia judge honoured in Palermo

A ceremony at Palermo's San Domenico Church on Tuesday was due to honour iconic slain anti-mafia judge Giovanni Falcone, who has been reburied in the church's pantheon alongside Sicily's most illustrious figures.

'Judge. Hero in the fight against the mafia' is inscribed on Falcone's tomb, which opened to the public on Tuesday.

Beside the tomb are two marble plaques commemorating Falcone and his fellow anti-mafia magistrate and close friend Paolo Borsellino, who were killed in mafia bombings in Sicily on 23 May and 19 July.

The plaques also commemorate Falcone's wife Francesca Morvillo and eight police officers, Rocco Dicillo, Antonio Montinaro, Vito Schifan, Agostino Catalano, Walter Cosina, Emanuela Loi, Vincenzo Li Muli, and Claudio Traina, who died in the blasts.

Falcone's disinterment at Palermo's Sant'Orsola cemetery and reburial in San Domenico Church's pantheon is the initiative of the city's order of Domenican friars.

"We wanted to make a concrete gesture to support those who work for the truth, justice and the common good," said Father Sergio Catalano, prior of the order.
