Police on Monday in the northwestern city of Turin arrested a 51-year-old convicted stalker after he bombarded his former girlfriend with thousands of phone-calls and text messages for months and threatened to kill her.

The man allegedly slapped and punched his ex-girlfriend on 31 December 2015 after forcing her to go out for dinner with him and threatened to kill her "sooner or later" if she didn't go back to him.

He had previously threatened and intimidated the woman outside her home and on 26 December 2015 had punctured the tyres of her car because she refused to spend Christmas with him.

The man also set fire to a clothing boutique belonging to one of his ex-girlfriend's female friends, according to prosecutors.
