Italy is "not at all happy" with the European Union's lack of progress on a new migration pact, foreign minister Luigi Di Maio said on Tuesday after over 2,000 people landed on tiny Lampedusa island at the weekend.
"We were right to back the current Commission and are pushing hard on the issues that concern us. We will be unyielding when things don't go well," Di Maio said.
"For example, we are not at all satisfied by the state of negotiations on migration, which we are working on at European level," Di Maio went on.
He was addressing a webinar organised by his grassroots Five-Star Movement.
The issue of migration is back on the agenda in Europe this week after good weather saw a surge in people crossing the Mediterranean, leading to calls to revive long-stalled debates on reform.
Italy and other Mediterranean countries want help in processing asylum claims and for other member states to accept quotas of asylum seekers and refugees amid strong resistance from some eastern and northern European states.
