Police on Tuesday arrested a Tunisian people-smuggling suspect in the Italian Alps near the border with France as he drove a car with three Syrian migrants inside, police said.
The Tunisian, who is resident in France, faces charges of abetting illegal immigration.
Police stopped the car he was driving during a security check in the northwestern town of Claviere in Val di Susa. The car had a French number plate and one of the Syrians was a minor, police said.
The Syrians, who were dressed in light summer clothing, did not appear to know each other or to know the Tunisian, according to police.
Clavieres is around 80 kilometres west of Turin, where a G7 summit is being held this week. Security has been tightened in Turin and the surrounding area during the summit.
