Syria peace talks won't resume on 25 Feb. says UN envoy

Peace talks will not "realistically" re-start in Syria on February 25, the United Nations special envoy Staffan de Mistura said in an interview published on Friday.

"I cannot realistically call new Geneva talks for 25 February. We need 10 days of preparation and invitations," de Mistura told Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet.

"But we aim to do so soon," de Mistura said.

Anonymous Arab diplomatic sources told Adnkronos International (AKI) they did not completely rule out the resumption of Syrian peace talks on 25 February, however.

Earlier this month, de Mistura suspended the Geneva peace talks until 25 February , saying military action had created an obstacle to the negotiations.

Activists report that battles, shelling and raids are continuing in Syria despite a cessation of hostilities proposed last week by world powers meeting in Munich, Germany.

Part of the plan was also to ensure access for humanitarian aid to besieged areas in Syria.
