Italy on Monday warned that time was running out in Libya amid a worsening civil war, urging foreign powers kept to keep out of the conflict and allow a rapid ceasefire.

"Italy is very worried about Libya, as the entire European Union should be," foreign minister Luigi Di Maio said on the sidelines of an EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels.

"The civil war is degenerating further and we don't have much time - our goals is to achieve a ceasefire as soon as possible," he told reporters.

Di Maio appealed to foreign powers not to meddle in Libya and to "allow a truce".

"There are two rival sides fighting in Libya, each with backing from various foreign powers that are interfering in the conflict. All these countries should stop any kind of meddling and allow a truce," he said.

Di Maio referenced the internationally recognised Government of National Accord in Tripoli which has support from Qatar and Turkey, and to eastern warlord Khalifa Haftar and allied political forces in Tobruk which have the backing of Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Russia.
