Tripoli clashes worry Italy

Italy expressed "great concern" at fighting between rival militias in Tripoli on Tuesday, when the premier appointed by the eastern parliament in Tobruk briefly tried to take over the capital.

"Italy has followed with great concern the armed clashes in Tripoli, Libya's capital and a city of almost 3 million inhabitants, which must not be hostage to political fights," the embassy tweeted.

"We urge all actors to abide by their commitment to refrain from violence and call for immediate and sincere efforts for a consensual path towards national elections to be attained in the UN-facilitated mediation efforts underway in Cairo," the tweet added.

"Violence would only undermine Libya, its stability and prosperity," the tweet added.

Tuesday’s fighting came as talks between representatives of Libya's rival administrations in Tripoli and in the eastern city of Tobruk are in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, for a second round of talks.

The Cairo talks are being facilitated by the UN in an attempt to get the two sides to agree on the constitutional basis to hold elections.
