Tripoli's Mitiga airport diverts flights after rocket fire

Libya's Airports Authority ordered the closure of Tripoli's only functioning airport, Mitiga and diverted scheduled flights to Misrata airport after rockets fell on the airport overnight, the Libyan Observer newspaper reported on its website

The rockets did not cause damage to Mitiga and all planes were safe and have been moved to Mistrata, the newspaper cited sources from Mitiga airport as saying.

A group calling itself “Tripoli Youth Movement” claimed responsibility for the shelling at Mitiga and posted a video showing the launch of the rockets, the Libyan observer said.

Mitiga had only reopened on Friday following a week of deadly clashes between rival militias in Tripoli's southern outskirts that were halted by a fragile ceasefire brokered by the United Nations envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salame.

The airport suspended flights on 30 August after an artillery shell landed near the control tower.
