Turkish MPs' backing on Thursday for a military deployment to war-torn Libya "raises tensions in an already dramatic situation", Italy's deputy foreign minister Marina Sereni tweeted.
"The Turkish parliament's vote on Libya raises tensions in an already dramatic situation," read the tweet.
"The European Union mission proposed by Italy is of ever-greater importance in order to ask all actors to respect the United Nations arms embargo, to silence the guns and give politics back its voice."
The Turkish vote to deploy troops was quickly criticised by Egypt, a key regional power, which said in a statement it “strongly condemned” the move.
Turkey's plan to send troops to Libya is being seen as largely symbolic in the first instance, according to analysts.
