The United Nations mission in Libya on Wednesday praised a decision by the central bank's directors to unify the dollar to dinar exchange rate in their first joint board meeting in five years as part of efforts to heal the war-ravaged country's ailing economy.

UNSMIL called the decision which takes effect on 3 January "an important and much needed step towards alleviating the suffering of the Libyan people and a good sign that this vital sovereign institution is moving towards unification".

Acting UN special envoy to Libya Stephanie Williams said that war-torn Libya's rival political factions should follow the central bank's lead and "put aside their personal interests and overcome their differences," according to the UNSMIL statement.

“Now is the moment for all Libyans - particularly the country’s political actors - to demonstrate similar courage, determination and leadership to put aside their personal interests and overcome their differences for the sake of the Libyan people in order to restore the country’s sovereignty and the democratic legitimacy of its institutions,” Williams stated.
