The UN refugee agency and its partners are boosting the distribution of emergency aid to Afghanistan amid growing hunger and destitution since the Taliban takeover in August and the withdrawal of all international forces.
"As living conditions in Afghanistan worsen, UNHCR (with other humanitarian organizations) is stepping up emergency aid programmes for thousands of people," tweeted UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi.
"Cash, tents, hygiene kits and other relief items are distributed daily to women and men in need including displaced people," the tweet added.
UN chief secretary-general Antonio Guterres warned this week that an even bigger humanitarian catastrophe is looming in Afghanistan amid a severe drought, growing food scarcity, economic meltdown and the upheavals of a 20-year war that forced thousands of families to flee their homes.
"Almost half of the population need humanitarian assistance. One in three don’t know where their next meal will come from," Guterres tweeted on Tuesday.
Guterres called for support and solidarity from the international community for Afghanistan, a country of 40 million people.
