The United Nations mission to Libya on Thursday said it was pleased that 18 fishermen from Sicily's Mazara Del Vallo fleet were freed from detention in the eastern port city of Benghazi for over three months.
"UNSMIL is pleased by the release today of the 18 fishermen who spent 107 days in captivity in Benghazi and congratulates the Italian government and their families on their release," read the tweet.
The fishermen were released after Italy's premier Giuseppe Conte and foreign minister Luigi Di Maio flew to Benghazi on Thursday for talks with warlord Khalifa Haftar, whose forces detained the men.
Haftar's forces intercepted the fishermen's boats off Libya's coast on 1 September for allegedly entering the country's waters.
