The United Nations envoy for Iraq has strongly condemned the car bomb attack on Wednesday at a market in a Shia Muslim district of Baghdad that killed scores of people and injured scores more.

“These are cowardly terrorist attacks on civilians who have done nothing but going about their normal daily lives,” said Jan Kubis, special representative of the UN secretary-general for Iraq.

This latest attack comes after a car bomb was detonated on 9 May near a restaurant in Baquba, 50 kilometres northeast of Baghdad, which also caused a high numbers of casualties.

“Such acts of terrorist violence are certainly against all the principles of decency and humanity, and as such must be strongly condemned,” Kubis stressed.

“I call on the authorities to do their utmost to quickly bring the perpetrators to justice," Kubis added.

The Islamic State jihadist group claimed the bombing in Baghdad's Sadr City neighbourhood which killed 70 people and wounded 100, figures which were similar to those of Iraqi officials.

IS, which considers Shias heretics, took credit for a twin suicide bombing in Sadr City in February that killed 70 people and has claimed recent attacks across the country.
