It is "unthinkable" for Taliban-controlled Afghanistan to return to the level of isolation that existed there 20 years ago before international forces occupied the country, according to foreign minister Luigi Di Maio.
"Afghan society has reached a level of connectivity that makes it unthinkable (for Afghanistan) to go back to the closed situation of two decades ago," Di Maio told members of Italy's Senate on Tuesday.
Di Maio was addressing the upper house of parliament after a four-day trip to Pakistan and other countries bordering Afghanistan as well as to Qatar.
