US-funded field hospital set up in coronavirus-hit northern Italy

A field hospital was put up on Wednesday in the coronavirus-hit northern Italian city of Cremona, thanks to a donation from United States non-profit organisation Samaritan's Purse, the US embassy tweeted.

"A 68-bed Respiratory Care Unit donated by American NGO @SamaritansPurse arrived yesterday in Cremona; the team sets it up today," read the tweet.

"As (US president Donald) Trump reaffirmed 'The United States loves Italy!' and the friendship between USA and Italy is stronger than ever," the tweet added.

Cremona is in the Lombardy region - epicentre of Italy's dramatic coronavirus outbreak. The region's medical facilities will "soon" be unable to treat new coronavirus cases, its governor Attilio Fontana said on Wednesday urging everyone to stay at home.

"Unfortunately the numbers of the contagion are not falling, they continue to be high," Fontana said.

"We will soon be unable to give a response to those who fall ill".

Of Italy's more than 26,000 confirmed coronavirus cases, over 12,000 are in the Lombardy region.
