US secretary of state Antony Blinken has praised foreign minister Luigi Di Maio for Italy's role in the evacuation of over 120,000 people from Kabul last month after the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan.
In our meeting today, I thanked Italian Foreign Minister @luigidimaio for Italy’s invaluable support for our evacuation operations from Kabul," Blinken tweeted.
"We discussed how the international community can continue to promote safety and security for Afghans, allies, and our partners," the tweet added.
Italy evacuated 5,011 people, including 4,890 Afghan nationals, among them 1,301 women and 1,453 children, according to the defence ministry - the highest number of any European Union country.
